Avenue du Maine, 75015, Paris
Montparnasse, located on the south side of Paris on the left bank of the Seine, has a rich artistic legacy. The neighborhood was the home of thousands of artists and writers, many of whom were expatriates, during the 1920s and 1930s, the postwar period referred to as Les Années Folles. Today the area is far more upscale in nature, with boutique hotels and gourmet grocery stores. The lively dining scene includes both French fare and international cuisine, and there are chic cocktail bars throughout the neighborhood. You can also dine at La Closerie Des Lilas, one of Ernest Hemingway's old watering holes. Both the Paris Observatory and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art are located in Montparnasse, and the ghoulish but fascinating Paris Catacombs lie at its southern border. The neighborhood is served by Paris's 4, 6, and 13 Metro lines.
