42 Boulevard Guigou, 13003 Marseille, France
The neighborhood: LA BELLE DE MAI In the 3rd arrondissement, near Saint-Charles train station, La Belle de Mai has long been the headquarters of the Marseille tobacco factory. The industrial zone of the district is located to the south, along the railway tracks and rue Guibal, while the village center of Belle de Mai is located back to the north, up to the Plombières expressways. The disused factory, which became an industrial wasteland, was renovated and transformed into a cultural and heritage site from the 1990s. It now houses the Marseille Municipal Archives, a Media Center and the Friche, an important cultural space. As for its name, it seems that it evokes a “vinea bela de mai”, designating a late vine “beautiful of remainder”. A very nice name for this historic “red” district, today much more colorful, whose future is taking shape between real estate development and a village core with a thousand and one places animated by local life. Popular area, many shops are nearby.
